Act Now: New York Nurse Practitioners Seek to Remove Collaborative Arrangements with Physicians
![]() |
New York (NY) legislation that seeks to remove requirements for nurse practitioners to work collaboratively with physicians has advanced to the NY Senate floor for vote. Legislative bills, S.3056-A/A.1535-A, would eliminate statutory requirements for nurse practitioners to maintain collaborative arrangements with a physician practicing in the same specialty. The legislation would also eliminate the requirement for a newly practicing nurse practitioner to maintain a written collaborative agreement with a physician. Your Academy considers NPs, to be a vital part of the caregiving team. However, we also believe that physician-led, patient-centered, team-based care is the best approach to providing optimized care for patients. Rather than removing these requirements, the standards for physician-NP collaboration should be strengthened to help better recognize and treat potentially complex cases. Please take a moment to join AAPM&R and the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) in opposing S.3056-A/A.1535-A by sending a customizable email to your legislator today. This legislation will be considered as early as this week, so your quick action is imperative. Thank you,Richard G. Chang, MD, MPHAAPM&R State Advocacy Committee, Chair |
