Interview for Residency Program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

This is an exciting time! You will have the unique opportunity to get a candid look at the program and to introduce yourself at a new level. You will build relationships during the interview process that will last long after the interview day. You will learn new things about the program, the institution, and the field—beyond what you expected. 

1. Be proud of yourself! Congratulations! Remember all the hard work and accomplishments that it took to get to this wonderful point!
2. Make sure your application is complete. Familiarize yourself with the Program, the Faculty, the Institution, and the geographic area. Review your own application – refresh on your timelines and all you are reporting.
3. Be Yourself. Be Honest. Be Positive. Be Prepared. ENJOY!
4. What to expect during an interview – expect that it is unpredictable. Be flexible! Each interviewer is different- some have read every aspect of your file and others have not yet reviewed it. Some will open up to a light conversation and others will ask specific questions. Some focus on professional topics and others on personal or general ones. The common denominator of all the interviews is that the interviewer is trying to get to know you! Be yourself and enjoy the conversation. If you are enjoying it then it is likely that the interviewer is enjoying it too.
5. The Program is seeking information to help determine: “Is this someone that I want to work with?” “Is this someone who will thrive in our medical center environment?” “Is this someone who truly understands the field of P.M.& R. and has determined that it is a good fit?” “Is this someone who will take outstanding care of our patients?” “Is this someone who will embrace the diversity of our field?” “Is this someone who I would welcome as a future colleague?”….
6. The applicant also must seek information: “Is this a good fit for me?” “Does this program have all the key components needed to become a well-rounded, well-trained physiatrist?” “Is this an environment in which I would like to spend three years?” “Do I feel comfortable in this environment?” ….
7. Spend as much time interacting and observing on the interview day as you can. Engage with as many department members as you can. Gather as much information as you can.
8. Compare and contrast programs. Academics, Clinical, Research, Teaching, Support systems, Geographic location, Program size, Program statistics, etc… Let the information settle. Then, Revisit.
9. List pros and cons for each program as they pertain to you personally. But also value the “Gut Feeling” in your ranking.
